Phoenix FD

Phoenix Fluid Simulator (FD) is a brand new grid based simulator that delivers outstanding rendering capabilities and fluid simulations with Autodesk 3ds Max.

Developed by Chaos, this innovative 3ds Max plug-in lets artists simulate fire, smoke and haze with higher accuracy and speed than ever before. Phoenix FD’s simulation core is developed using a unique grid-based approach that delivers faster calculation times and more physically accurate and realistic simulations.

How does it work? Fluids such as liquids, gases and plasma are substances that continually deform and change. Their movements are influenced by properties such as temperature, mass and velocity. The grid-based approach lets you control and change each of these properties through out the whole simulation process allowing you to produce a much more realistically accurate simulation. The resulting simulation is then used for rendering, producing a far more realistic image than can be generated with 3ds Max alone.

NB: You will need a dongle to operate the software. You may use your existing V-Ray dongle or purchase a new Phoenix one.

Features

  • Wind simulation that moves fluid objects (ie. torches, flying fireballs) without the use of fake additional winds.
  • Fast and accurate slow fluid simulation.
  • Uses a particle system for better accuracy.
  • Supports all 3ds Max standard space warp modifiers to easily affect the movement of fluid.
  • Renders textures quickly and accurately.
  • GPU accelerated preview.

Benefits

  • The simulation process of Phoenix FD runs independently and does not lock the user interface of 3ds Max. This allows the user to make changes in the simulation and even to perform rendering. Furthermore, changes to the simulator parameters immediately affect the simulation.
  • Phoenix FD is capable of simulating a whole array of additional processes like pressure decay, thermal radiation cooling and mass-temperature dependence, making it the ideal fluid dynamics plug-in for 3ds Max.
  • The simulation of slow moving fluids is a problem in many grid based simulators, because of the undesired diffusion in the Semi-Lagrangian advection process. Phoenix FD has been optimised to simulate arbitrary slow fluids without any undesired diffusion.
