Meeting RenderMan for Maya and Pro Sever half way, Pixar’s RenderMan Studio™ is the ultimate rendering suite, providing shading, rendering, compositing, and renderfarm management in one package.

RenderMan Studio includes elements of other Pixar's RenderMan products giving the user a high quality comprehensive tool that is fully customisable.

Included in the package are RenderMan for Maya "Pro", an integrated interface for Maya that is the "bridge" between Maya and RenderMan; Slim, an interactive graphical shader editor; Tractor, Pixar's new and improved work dispatching system and "it", the image tool with powerful script based compositing.

What makes it Pro? It's possible to directly manipulate 3D data outside of Maya the animation package with RFM Pro... and that has big implications in production. In the world of RenderMan, this 3D data is called RIB, and it's one of the key features of RFM Pro: the ability to export, import, filter, merge and simply hack RIB to your hearts’ content. With the magic of RIB, you can assemble scenes of incredible complexity that are far larger than anything Maya could ever display interactively... or write custom tools that can create procedural effects that would be impossible in Maya. RIB is a useful tool.

Features

  • Slim™, is the shader tool that increases productivity and lets you create original RenderMan shaders interactively. You can also customise Slim with your own RSL code and scripts.
  • Render directly to "it", Pixar's imaging tool. You can store images in catalogues, wipe between images, add notes to images, post process with "IceMan" compositing, display the luminance of HDR imagery and view OpenEXR files.

Tractor is Pixar's new and improved work dispatching system which takes the hassle out of job distribution.

  • External or Internal Rendering: RenderMan Studio can render either to RenderMan Pro Server or to an (optional) internal renderer. For both preview and batch rendering, the internal renderer has some benefits. But generally speaking, the shading and lighting artists in a studio will want RenderMan Studio on their workstations, and the render farm will usually be home to RenderMan Pro Server.

What's New

RenderMan Studio 3.0 is the latest version of Pixar's advanced suite of tools for shading and lighting TDs.

New Features

  • Relighting: GUI for interactive, final render-quality relighting of your Maya scene (RFM Pro Only, RenderMan Pro Server Required).
  • Maya Fluids: Full support for motion blur and the ability to produce depth maps, for Deep Shadows, etc.
  • RenderMan Controls: New consolidated user interface for intuitive, one-window access to the RFM's basic settings and operations.
  • Co-Shader Support: Now supports tightly bound light/co-shader combinations.
  • Slim Scripting: MTOR-style Slim scripting is now supported via slimcmd and slimmsg.
  • TCL: Now supports Slim-side Tcl expressions (e.g. mattr, etc.)

  • Maya Render Layers: Pass mechanisms for both implicit and explicit passes have been improved.
